Research

The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization 2013 Staffing Guidelines , 2012 Facts and Figures, Simeone & Thomas 2007 Hospice Financial Benchmarks, and Hospice Association of America 2010 Hospice Facts and Statistics agree in their analyses that average hospice RN Case Manager patient caseloads range from 10-12 patients per nurse, with some nurses reporting caseloads as high as 20 or more patients. While it refrains from recommending a set caseload, the Model Curriculum makes the argument for increasing the RN’s caseload as well as the number of lower-paid hospice aids to perform the daily task-oriented jobs. All of the afore-mentioned resources agree that the RN’s role should transition into that of case manager in which she assesses patients and coordinates care, but leaves the majority of care to lower paid clinical and volunteer caregivers.
